Pat Phelan
Breeding Operations Manager
Born on a National Hunt stud farm in southern Ireland, Pat Phelan joined the Irish army at the age of 18 and competed at international level in eventing and showjumping.

After being promoted to Captain, Pat became O.C. and Instructor at the Army Equitation School detachment at The Curragh, where his role also took in the Irish racing academy. Pat later trained at The Curragh, where he brought on the subsequent Gold Cup winner Jodami, before he moved to Japan to manage a large pre-training centre of 250 horses and 60 staff.
On his return to Europe, he spent two years managing Highclere Stud, and joined Ermyn Lodge in June 2006 as trainer and breeding operations manager. “We’ve got a great team of happy staff, and it’s an ideal combination of racing and breeding,” Pat says.
Tony Bishop
Head Lad
Tony is a graduate of the British Racing School. He has been in racing since 1991 and brings a wealth of experience to the yard. Prior to joining Ermyn Lodge Tony spent 16 years as a Work Rider for Phillip Mitchell.
Paddy Bradley
Work Rider and Stable Apprentice
Paddy did work experience with Jim Boyle and has been with us since 2012. Originally as a Conditional Jockey, Paddy rode winners in bumpers and over hurdles. Since he has taken out his Apprentice License, his winners include the Apprentice Derby on Leah Freya at Epsom and Forceful Appeal at Lingfield on Champions Day.
Sophie Ralston
Work Rider and Stable Apprentice
Sophie is a Graduate of the Irish Racing Apprentice School. She has been with us since 2012 and her winners include Baby Dottie and Green Earth. Sophie is a product of the pony racing field in Ireland and is a very experienced rider.
Pasha Grymalsky
Work Rider
Pasha is a graduate of the Ukrainian Racing School. He came to us in 2015 from Kevin Ryan’s where he gained seven years’ experience. He is a very capable horseman and a very experienced rider.
Jade Crane
Work Rider
Jade is a graduate of Newmarket Racing School. She came to us in 2015 after short periods at other yards in Epsom. Jade has settled here well and shown herself to be a competent rider and a good judge.
Ella Boardman
Work Rider
Ella is a graduate of Newmarket Racing School who came to us in 2016 for work experience. After graduation from Newmarket Ella returned to Ermyn Lodge and has improved every day since. She is a very capable young rider.
Abigayle King
Groom/Work Rider
Our most recent arrival, Abigayle is a graduate of Newmarket Racing School. She has two years’ experience with Roger Charlton and is a very capable young rider.
